Tourism grows but increasing hotel supply presents challenges


• Tokyo’s winning bid to host the 2020 Olympics will spur new hotel openings in anticipation for the Games.
• Regional competition in the MICE and Gaming sector is expected to intensify and impact on tourist flows to some destinations in Asia with upcoming integrated developments, offering casino components, planned in Japan, Philippines and Taiwan.
• Bali continues to successfully improve its infrastructure with the recent opening of a 12.7 km toll road, which links Benoa with Kuta and Nusa Dua. The new US$218 million highway – the first toll road in Bali – was designed to ease congestion in Bali’s southern tourist areas and was completed in time for the APEC Summit, which commenced in the first week of October.
